Whippet Health Foundation
Health Clinics - 2008

The Whippet Health Foundation will be conducting health clinics in conjunction with the AWC National Specialty in April, 2008 in Eugene, Oregon. We will have the following testing available: CERF, BAER and Cardiac Echocardiogram clinics, AKC DNA profile tests and the new Myostatin Deficiency DNA test from DDC.

This year we have a few changes. The Cardiology Study team headed by Dr. Rebecca Stepien will be absent and will be going to every other year testing based on the results they have obtained thus far in the study. They will not be in Eugene, Oregon, but will resume testing next year in Atlanta. For Eugene we have found a local cardiologist, Dr. Gary Wood, who will be conducting two days worth of echocardiograms for screening tests. These results will not be utilized in the study, thus there will be no rechecks, no free senior exams and no reduced fees. Because of the reduced number of days for testing, we only have 32 spots available.

The other change is that the Whippet Health Foundation will subsidize a portion of the per dog cost for BAER, cardiac testing and myostatin DNA tests for those owners willing to enter their dogs and test results into the WHF database. While test results from all clinics are confidential, test results released to the WHF Database will be public record (open database).

Eye Clinic: Wednesday, April 23rd. This clinic will be conducted by Dr. Sarah Maxwell, DVM, ACVO. Cost is $25 per dog. The CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation ) exam is a once a year test that examines your dogs eyes for inherited eye disease. The exam will require pupil dilation and takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Sign up sheets for appointments will be available starting Monday morning. The clinic will run from 9am until finished.

BAER Hearing Clinic: Wednesday morning, April 23rd. This clinic will be conducted by Dr. Susanne Hughes, DVM. The cost is $45 per dog ($25 for database participants). The BAER (Brain stem Auditory Evoked Response) test is a once per lifetime test to definitively determine if your dog can hear from both ears. The test usually takes 10-15 minutes and sedation is not necessary. It is important for everyone to have their Whippets checked, particularly animals used for breeding. It is possible for a dog to be deaf in one ear and appear to have normal hearing. Sign up sheets for appointments will be available starting Monday morning.

Cardiac Echocardiogram Clinic: Wednesday, April 23rd and Thursday, April 24th. This clinic will be conducted by Dr. Gary Wood, DVM, dip ACVIM of Cardiology Northwest. These results will not be used in our ongoing whippet heart study. The cost of the exam is $175 ($100 for database participants). Only one whippet will be allowed per owner to pre-register.

AKC DNA Profile test: (DNA cheek swab test): $30/sample, mailed in with all samples following the national. Swabs will be available during the national from either Dr. Lisa Costello or Dr. Connie Brunkow

Myostatin Deficiency test: (DNA test for the double muscle gene): $48/sample ($28 for database participants), mailed in with all samples following the national. Swabs will be available during the national from Dr. Lisa Costello. She will also be attending the race meet in Beavercreek the day following the conclusion of the AWC national.

If you will not be attending the national, the swabs from DDC and payment can be mailed directly to Dr. Costello and will be submitted with all samples following the national specialty (they must be submitted together). These samples must reach her at the address on the health clinic sign up form no later than APRIL 30th, 2008. If you will not be attending the AWC national and need to order sample collection kits directly, call 1-800-625-0874, or email contact@vetdnacenter.com.
